La critique de Brillant Corners sur AllMusic lui attribue cinq étoiles sur cinq. Les sessions d'enregistrements se déroulent au Reeves Sound Studios situé à Manhattan le 9 et 15 octobre 1956 (respectivement pour les titres 2, 3 et 1, 4) puis le 7 décembre 1956 (titre 5).

La seconde session se déroule six jours plus tard avec l'enregistrement de deux autres titres, Brilliant Corners et I Surrender, Dear et enfin le morceau Bemsha Swing est enregistré au mois de décembre.Įnregistrements La première session se déroule la veille du trente neuvième anniversaire de Monk aux Studios Reeves Sound à Manhattan deux morceaux y sont enregistrés, le premier Ba-Lue Bolivar Ba-Lues-Are est un blues, le second une ballade nommée Pannonica en l'honneur de la baronne Pannonica de Koenigswarter, une amie de Monk et qui était aussi à cette époque une admiratrice et protectrice de nombreux musiciens de jazz à New York. Deux ont lieu en octobre 1956 et la dernière au mois de décembre de la même année. L'album est constitué de cinq titres dont trois compositions de Monk et a nécessité trois sessions d'enregistrement en deux mois pour être finalisé.
Woodward and Galvin formed the Experimental Pop Band in 1995. They released A History Of White Trash in 1993 before splitting up. Two more albums followed in 1989 ( Joy Ride) and 1990 ( Hooked), followed by a second compilation, Creamy Stuff, in 1991. In March 1988, the band set up another label, McQueen, and released third album, Somebody Up There Likes Me, followed by a collection of their sought-after early singles, Everything I Ever Wanted.
The video, featuring Woodward running Rix-like around a couch with his trousers around his ankles, was shown on The Tube, further raising the band's profile.
"Brian Rix", a re-recorded version of a track from the LP, with added trumpet, and a tribute to Rix, the "king of farce", was issued as a single, the proceeds going to Mencap, the charity of which Rix was chairman. With an explosion of indie pop groups in 1986, their May release Fruit Machine EP gained them both attention and radio airplay, followed by a second mini-album, What's In A Word. Their first (mini-)album, Growing Up Absurd, appeared the following year. The band's first releases were early examples of indie pop, with three singles being released in 1984 on their own SS20 label. A later addition was Phil Elvins on guitar.
